CanadaPetCare March Sale 2022

Thanksgiving is a happy time of the year where your extended family, friends and delectable food make it a fun gathering. But before planning for something extravagant, it is important to take care of your little furry friend in the house.  Remember that even small things can have a drastic effect on the health of your furry companion. Let us look at some of the common exposures that should be avoided by pets this Thanksgiving Day:

Thanksgiving Foods Your Dog Or Cat Should Not Eat

1. Fatty Foods

Butter, bacon, fatty meat drippings, gravies and meat scraps can cause lots of problems in pets. In fact, they can result in serious threat of pancreatitis. Some of the clinical signs of the disease include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and loss of appetite. Certain dog breeds like Schnauzers are more prone to developing this disease. But all dog breeds ingesting fatty foods are prone to this disorder. It might take up to four days for the symptoms to be visible.

2. Cast-Off Food Items

Discarded turkey trussing, bones and corn cobs can cause obstruction in the stomach of the pet resulting in gastrointestinal injury. This may require a surgical removal or repair.

3. Raisins, Currents & Grapes

Although these foods are favorites during Thanksgiving celebrations there is a huge risk of acute renal failure with even small ingestion.

4. Nuts

Nuts are high in fiber and can cause pancreatitis. Macadamia nuts are more critical and its ingestion can cause diarrhea, vomiting, inability to rise or walk properly.

5. Holiday Celebrations

Even a bouquet of lilies that you received from the guests can cause acute renal failure in felines. Bittersweet flowers can result in gastrointestinal upset. Candles can cause burns while flame-less candles have batteries which, when ingested can cause gastrointestinal burns and corrosive injury.

6. Say “No” To Cakes

If you are planning to prepare Thanksgiving cakes, ensure that your pet does not smell his nose of the batter, especially raw eggs that can result in food poisoning in pets.

7. Never Allow Your Pet To Indulge In Too Much Of Thanksgiving Treats

If your pet eats a few pieces of small, boneless, cooked turkey, tastes mashed potatoes, or even licks a pumpkin pie it should not be a big problem. But if he overindulges then it can result in stomach upset, diarrhea or in some worst cases inflammatory condition of the pancreas known as pancreatitis. In fact, it is the best thing to feed a regular diet to your pets on Thanksgiving Day.

8. Garlic & Onions

Garlic, onions, chives and leeks are all toxic to dogs and cats. Too much of either of these can cause diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and elevated heart rate. Foods like stuffed or deviled eggs that contain these ingredients should be avoided to be fed to pets at all costs.

9. Sugar & Artificial Sweeteners

Sugar is an essential part of a pet’s overall well-being. But too much of it can result in vomiting and diarrhea. Artificial sweeteners, especially containing Xylitol are extremely dangerous for pets. It is present in toothpaste, baked goods, mints and gums. It is very difficult to find out whether Xylitol is present in the sweet product, hence, it is recommended not to give sweet treats to the pets during Thanksgiving Day.
